Canal Awareness Day
The whole family is
welcomed to come and experience first-hand and up-close exposure to the
engineering, architectural and social history of the 1834 Catoctin Aqueduct and
its 1834 companion the B&O Railroad stone viaduct.
Walking and talking
tours of the Catoctin Aqueduct, including the surrounding sites encompassing
Lander Lockhouse and Lock 29, are planned by historic transportation experts, such
as Denis J. McMullan, President, McMullan & Assoc., Vienna VA, who are
the professional civil engineers for the Monocoacy
Aqueduct, Erie Canal sites, and now this project. Dr. Karen M. Gray,
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm - Informal “Porch Talks” at the
Lockhouse – getting more familiar with the local history of the canal,
railroad, and life along the “Path through Transportation History” from Point
of Rocks to the Catoctin Aqueduct.
Organized by The Point
of Rocks Ruritan Club in cooperation with the C&O Canal National Historical
Park, to entertain, educate, and
raise awareness of the Catoctin Aqueduct and of The C&O Canal Current
Initiatives/ Catoctin Aqueduct Restoration Fund, held by The Community
Foundation of Frederick County, that earmarks resources for restoring,
rebuilding, and commemorating, the Catoctin Aqueduct.
This event is free and open to all ages.

from
From intersection of Rt 340 (Jefferson St.) and US Rt 15 –
travel west on Rt 340 to Lander Road at Jefferson, MD (5 mi), exit to Lander
Road, turn left and travel south for 1.5 miles, turn right to stay on Lander
Road and travel south for 2.5 miles (crossing Point of Rocks Road/Rt 464) to the entrance to the C&O Canal National
Historical Park at Lander, MD (watch for parking signs). Total travel distance 10.5 miles.
