Adopt a Stone
FAQ
What do you get when you adopt a stone? You
will receive confirmation of your donation from The Community
Foundation of Frederick County and you will receive a
confirmation of your stone adoption from The Catoctin Aqueduct
Restoration Fund, Inc.. When
the restoration is completed all donors who have adopted a stone
will be provided a final adoption certificate that will confirm the
adoption of your stone. Donors will also be provided a location map
that will enable donors to visit the aqueduct and locate their
adopted stone.
Why aren’t all the stones and their specific locations
known in advance and why aren’t all the stones numbered?
The ring, key, berm coping and towpath coping stones will be able to
be specifically identified when adopting a stone because we have
salvaged most of these stones and have determined their specific
placement. The parapet, spandrel, water table and prism stones will
initially be adopted by category because we are not certain of the
specific placement of these stones. Once placement of the stones in
the aqueduct is finalized a specific stone will be assigned to the
donor. In all cases, donors will be provided a certificate
acknowledging their adoption and a location map that will
enable them to locate their adopted stone.
Will my name be placed on my adopted stone? No.
National Park Service regulations do not allow naming on historic
structures. Donors will be recognized on the Catoctin Aqueduct
Restoration Fund, Inc. website and where possible, the names of
donors will be inserted into the image of the aqueduct on the
website.
When will I receive my adoption certificate and location
map? Once the restoration of the aqueduct is complete the
adoption certificate and a location map will be sent to donors. The
current plan has the restoration being finally completed by mid
2009.
